Death On My Shoulder, Devil At My Back

I live with Death perched on my shoulder and the devil at my back.

One would think that was terrible, but I honestly don’t mind.

They are reminders of my humanity and of who I am inside,

They make sure I never forget myself.

Death reminds me not to believe myself to be better than all,

Because like all else, he can claim me with a single thought.

The devil reminds me not to think myself to be better than all,

Because like all else, he can tempt me with a single glance.

And so I am glad to live with Death perched on my shoulder and the devil at my back.
